Washer Leaking During Fill Cycle? A Common Cause Many People Miss

This guide is brought to you by ARNI Services, a locally owned appliance repair company providing in-home repair and installation across the GTA.

If your washing machine leaks only when it is filling with water, the problem may not be the water inlet valve or the siphon break valve itself. In many cases, the real issue is a restricted fill hose.
This is a common problem, especially with Whirlpool Thin Twin and compact washers.

At ARNI Services, we repair Whirlpool washers across Toronto, Vaughan, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, and surrounding areas. If your washer fills and tumbles but still doesn’t work properly, there may be an internal issue that needs professional attention. The Problem: Water Leaking From the Siphon Break During Fill

In this case, the washer began leaking water during fill-up. The homeowner traced the leak to the siphon break valve, where water was escaping through the small vent holes on top.

At first glance, this usually points to:

  • A failed siphon break valve
  • Soap buildup
  • Drain or discharge problems

The siphon break valve was replaced, cleaned, and reinstalled – but the leak continued.

That’s when the real issue became clear.

Why the Siphon Break Wasn’t the Real Problem

The siphon break valve is designed to release water through its vent holes if pressure backs up. When water cannot flow freely into the tub, it has nowhere to go – so it escapes through the vents.

In this case, the washer wasn’t draining incorrectly. The problem was that water couldn’t enter the tub fast enough.

The Actual Cause: A Kinked or Collapsed Fill Hose

After further inspection, the root cause was found:

👉 The fill hose running from the siphon break to the tub was partially collapsed near the drum connection.

This restriction slowed water flow just enough to cause a backup, forcing water out of the siphon break vents during fill.

Once the damaged hose was replaced, the leak stopped immediately.

Signs This Might Be Your Issue

You may be dealing with a restricted or collapsed fill hose if:

  • The washer leaks only during fill
  • The siphon break leaks even after replacement
  • Turning off hot or cold water does not stop the leak
  • Drain and discharge cycles work normally
  • The hose feels soft, kinked, or misshapen near the tub

These hoses can collapse over time due to heat, age, or detergent residue – especially in stacked or compact washer units.

Why This Repair Is Often Missed

This issue is easy to overlook because:

  • The hose may look fine externally
  • The washer still fills (just not fast enough)
  • Replacing the siphon break seems like the logical fix

Unfortunately, replacing parts without checking water flow paths can lead to repeat leaks and unnecessary costs.

When to Call a Professional

While this repair can sometimes be straightforward, accessing internal hoses often requires:

  • Proper disassembly
  • Correct OEM parts
  • Avoiding damage to the tub or fittings

At ARNI Services Appliance Repair, we don’t just replace parts – we diagnose the actual cause of the problem so you don’t pay twice.
