Maintain Your Dishwasher

Dishwasher Maintanace

For just about every kitchen the dishwashers have become a standard. It is in the kitchen of most homes, apartments and offices. Basically, a dishwasher is an appliance that cleans and rinses dirty dishes. You just have to load the dishes, add detergent, set the proper washing cycles, turn it on and wait for the magic to happen, clean dishes.

Many of us don’t think about getting the dishwasher cleaned or maintained or how to make it more effective. After all, shouldn’t the dishwasher get cleaned when the dishes get cleaned? Unfortunately no, dirt and particles from food build up over time, some of them affecting the dishwasher’s efficiency. Dishwashers last longer and run more efficiently when they are properly maintained. Your dishwasher should be cleaned to keep it working properly.

  • Use The Manual :  Dishwashers are not very mechanically complex and might seem like there is nothing you need to know more. You will, however, get better results by reading and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Such manuals are, after all, made for a reason. Take a few minutes to get a better understanding of how your dishwasher works in optimum conditions and how to clean it.
  • Remove Buildup : If your dishwasher has an automatic cleaning function it is worth running it every few weeks to remove the food and grime that is stuck. If it doesn’t have a dedicated setting, or you want to give it a really deep clean, try using baking soda and vinegar (white) and run it through a regular cycle. (You should not use bleach to clean parts made from stainless steel as it causes them to rust)
  • Clean Sprayer Arm Nozzles: If those arms don’t spin properly or if the holes in them are full of dirt, your dishes won’t get washed properly. Clean them as necessary with a toothpick or pipe cleaners. When the nozzles are clean, they will spray better and your dishes will come out cleaner.
  • Run hot water before starting the dishwasher cycle:  Turn the faucet on until water gets hot before running the dishwasher. When you follow this step the water that get filled into the dishwasher would be hot instead of cold. It is a especially useful in the winter weather, as it takes longer to heat up the water.
  • Avoid overcrowding your dishwasher: The dishwasher is less effective if it’s crammed full of stuff. If water and soap cannot freely circulate, your dishes will not come out clean. So even if jamming in plates would seem like a good idea, as you won’t have to do it by hand or run a second load later. Just note, it’s easier to wash a couple of plates by hand than re-run a whole load because the dishwasher was overloaded.
